Independent travel training

We offer travel training to young people up to the age of 18 who currently can’t get to school or college independently because of their special educational needs or disability.

Through practical and classroom-based sessions with a trainer, each young person gains the skills needed to take that journey independently.

They could also gain an Open Awards qualification which formally recognises their achievement.

A parent, teacher, tutor or anyone who works with or cares for a young person who may benefit from travel training, can make a referral.

The young person must already qualify for free home to school transport due to their special educational needs or disability. For more information about home to school transport please email sen.transport@liverpool.gov.uk.

FAQs

The training is designed to increase a young person’s confidence, independence, self-esteem and wellbeing. Areas covered in the sessions include planning a journey, understanding personal community and road safety, learning walking routes, using timetables and visual aids, asking for help and using money.

Parents and carers are involved right from the start. A trainer visits for an initial assessment to find out what travel experience the young person has had and to help plan their individual journey. Training progress is also measured and fed back to parents and carers.

The young person will only be ‘signed off’ when the trainer is confident that they have reached their level of independence. Once they have completed the programme, they will be presented with a certificate. We will continue to evaluate and assess the young person once their training has ended.
