Bins and recycling

Collection of sharps bins

Sharps bins are available on prescription from your GP or healthcare provider. To set up a regular or one-off collection for your sharps bin, please contact your GP.

Your GP will contact the council and you will receive a registration letter telling you how to use the service and on-demand booking system.

Existing customers were sent letters in September 2022 explaining how to sign up for the new on-demand booking system which allows you to book a collection when you need one via text message. Any collection dates you may have been given under the old system are no longer valid.

On the day of collection

On your day of collection, please ensure that the sharps box is securely locked and your name and address are written on the container before giving it to the driver.

What goes in my sharps bin?

You can use your sharps bin to dispose of clinical waste such as:

  • needles
  • syringes
  • lancets used with finger-pricking devices
  • clippers

After you've used the above items they must be placed in the sharps bin immediately - do not try to take them out again. Used needles must not be bent or broken before disposal and must not be recapped.
