Empty homes strategy

The Empty Homes Strategy aims to facilitate new initiatives to help achieve our overall objectives to reduce vacancy rates and the detrimental impacts they can create socially and environmentally.

The Housing Market Renewal Initiative (HMRI) is tackling our failing housing market in the north and eastern suburbs of the city, but there are still many privately owned homes across our suburbs which are vacant.

The Vacant and Dilapidated Property Initiative enables the council to use powers with which we can force owners to think about the long term future of their property and bring them back into use.  It allows us to take action against owners of vacant and run down properties.

The delivery of this strategy supports the council’s overall Housing Strategy and the Private Sector Housing Renewal Strategy.
