Maker Difference - Decoding the library

This Saturday 18th November 2017 sees the official launch of the 'Maker Difference' project across Liverpool’s community libraries.

Funded from Libraries Opportunities for Everyone Innovation Fund, ‘Maker Difference’ will enable young people of all ages to engage with digital and physical creative activities and learn valuable skills whilst having fun.

Events and locations

A ‘Maker Day’ at Toxteth Library on 18th November 10.30am-3.30pm to will give young people opportunities to see 3D printing in action with 3D-Melt, invent some cool vehicles using BBC Micro: bits with the award winning Little Sandbox and participate in our first ever Game Jam helping to create the interactive non-fiction game ‘Arcade of Babel’ with game artists from Domestic Science.

Maker sessions will then take place on most following Saturdays at Norris Green and Toxteth libraries.

In addition to the Saturday clubs, starting January 2018, there will also be opportunities to attend workshops and participate in holiday activities not only at these two libraries but also Parklands and Central libraries.

From photography to coding to crafts, there will be something new for everyone to try, and of course the Library Service already provides books on creative, digital and making subjects to inspire young people get their inventive thinking hats on.

Central Library also has a Sunday Code Club which will be starting a new term in January and you can apply via the Maker Difference website. All of these maker activities will lead up to ‘Young MakeFest’ a spin off from the annual Liverpool Makefest which will take place on 23rd March 2018 in Central Library.

To coincide with the launch the library service will be lending a limited amount of BBC Micro:bits for young people to take home and experiment with. These will be available from 19th November at Central, Norris Green and Toxteth Libraries but will also be available at other selected sites later this month.
