Great Howard Street Bridge Replacement Scheme

Start date: End of August 2016.
Duration: Approximately 46 weeks.

This scheme is the first stage of a £32m project designed to improve Great Howard Street (A565) which links Liverpool with Sefton. This road will also be a vital route for freight to and from the new Liverpool2 deep water container terminal.

Great Howard Street Bridge, and the tunnel next to it, currently support Great Howard Street itself. The bridge and tunnel failed their last structural assessment and need to be replaced so the road can stay open without us having to limit the weight of freight traffic that travels along it. In addition, the North Liverpool Key Corridor road widening scheme cannot go ahead until this work has been completed.

£9.7m has been won from the Department for Transport Challenge Fund to replace the bridge.

Two official diversion routes will be in force from 30th August 2016:

  • For all traffic (including HGVs) - via Sandhills Lane, Commercial Road, Vauxhall Road and Leeds Street.
  • For non-HGVs only - via Dublin Street, Regent Road, Waterloo Road and Paisley Street.
  • View a map of the main diversion routes.

These diversion routes will be clearly signposted on the road and we’ll keep you up to date with the progress of the scheme on these pages, and via our Facebook and Twitter accounts.
