About the Cycle Aigburth project
Cycle Aigburth is a project that works closely with local businesses, schools and community groups to encourage cycling in the Aigburth area of Liverpool.
We want to get Aigburth cycling as well as promoting Aigburth as a great place to cycle. It is fun, free and a great way to keep fit, so come join us and get cycling and spread the word.

Bike Buddy Scheme
Focusing on those who prefer to have personal attention and individual advice, 'Bike Buddies' partners people with an experienced cyclist who knows the local cycle network.
The 'Bike Buddies' are all experienced cyclists with a good local knowledge and able to work out the most suitable route for the required journey. They will be able to assist with:
- Selecting the most appropriate route.
- Information on the local cycle network.
- Tips on riding safely in traffic, in different environments and in different weather conditions.
The council has made teaming up with a Bike Buddy is as easy as possible. People simply need to contact transportation@liverpool.gov.uk. You will be asked to detail the journey you wish to make and your ability and confidence level. You will then be contacted by a buddy to discuss your requirements and arrange a time to meet for the journey.
Bike Buddies is aimed primarily at people wanting to start cycling to work. However, enquiries from people interested in cycling to other places are also welcomed. To get the best out of this service, cyclists should have a specific journey in mind, for example to the supermarket, health centre or a community venue.
Please note:
- All Bike To Work journeys must take place within Liverpool.
- Cyclists must be over 18 to take advantage of the scheme.
- The Bike Buddies are there to help with route finding and confidence building they are not able to teach people how to ride a bike.
Become a volunteer cycle leader
If you live locally and want to get involved in the project, become a volunteer cycle leader. You will receive training to provide you with the skills and knowledge to develop and risk assess a route, as well as leading a group of cyclists for a number of leisurely bike rides.
The training is free for local volunteers but in return we expect you to get actively involved in the project, committing to leading a number of previously developed routes on a regular basis. The rides will vary in length and will include both off road and on road cycling. Depending on the number of volunteers, we expect this to be one ride every month. However, if you can commit to more rides, that's even better. Please note that this will involve giving up your time out of office hours, including evenings and weekends.
The project cannot cover any expenses and all volunteers will be CRB checked.
Free cycling and maintenance sessions
Aigburth residents can get free sessions to brush up on cycling skills and gain confidence to ride on the road. Sessions are tailored to individual needs, regardless of age or ability. The training is informal and can take place when and where you want, but most of all it's fun.
Maintenance sessions include minor repairs such as fixing punctures to adjusting brake cables.
