Statutory sick pay

If your employee is off work because of coronavirus, Statutory Sick Pay can be paid from the first day they were off subject to the criteria set out on GOV.UK being met.

For businesses with fewer than 250 employees, the cost of providing up to two weeks of statutory sick pay (SSP) per employee will be refunded by the government in full.

The eligibility criteria for the scheme will be as follows:

  • employers with fewer than 250 employees will be eligible - the size of an employer will be determined by the number of people they employed as of 28th February 2020
  • employers should maintain records of staff absences and payments of SSP, but employees will not need to provide a GP fit note
  • employers will receive payments at the relevant SSP rate they have paid to current or former employees for eligible sickness periods on or after 13th March 2020

The online service for employers to make their claim goes live on 26th May 2020.
