Cases, control and testing
Report published 24th November 2020
Data extracted covering testing up to 21st November 2020 show that the total number of confirmed cases for the last 7 days is 787, a decrease of 599 cases on the previous week. The latest weekly rate of Covid-19 in Liverpool is 158 per 100,000 population and the latest positivity testing rate* is 1.8%.
Of the 787 confirmed cases in the last 7 days, 214 (27.2%) were detected using Lateral Flow Testing (LFT) kits. At an assumed Covid population prevalence of 2% in Liverpool, one in five LTF positive results will be false positive. They will require confirmatory Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing.
The majority of cases (56%) were in those aged under 40 years, whereas 24% cases were in those aged 40-59 yrs. Of all the confirmed cases in the last seven days 51% were female and 49% were male. Of those cases where ethnicity was given, 84% people were recorded as White British and 16% people were from a Black and Minority Ethnic background.
Compared to the previous week, we have seen a slight decrease in rates of new infections in the city, however the current 7-day rate remains very high. The rate of new infections in older people is particularly worrying at the current very high level, resulting in increased pressure on hospitals and deaths from Covid for weeks to come.
The wards with the largest number of confirmed cases are Fazakerley (73 cases), Riverside (39 cases), Tuebrook and Stoneycroft (37 cases), Yew Tree (36 cases), Allerton and Hunts Cross (35 cases), Speke-Garston (33 cases), Everton (32 cases), Central (32 cases), Old Swan (31 cases), and Picton (28 cases).
Between 16th-22nd November 2020 there were 174 registered deaths in Liverpool, of which 35% (n=61) were Covid-19 deaths.
* Positivity rate = total number of positive tests from all tests carried out in the last 7 days
