Cases, control and testing
Report published 3rd December 2020
Data extracted covering testing up to 30th November 2020 show that the total number of confirmed cases for the last 7 days is 481, a decrease of 210 cases on the previous week. The latest weekly rate of COVID-19 in Liverpool is 96.6 per 100,000 population and the latest positivity testing rate* is 1.2%.
Of the 481 confirmed cases in the last 7 days, 119 (24.7%) were detected using Lateral Flow Testing (LFT) kits. At the current COVID population prevalence in Liverpool, between 1 in 2 to 1 in 5 people who test positive with a lateral flow test might be false positive. They will require confirmatory Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing.
The majority of cases (53%) were in those aged under 40 years, whereas 26% cases were in those aged 40-59 yrs. Of all the confirmed cases in the last seven days 56% were female and 44% were male. Of those cases where ethnicity was given, 80% people were recorded as White British and 20% people were from a BAME** background.
Compared to the previous week, we have seen a slight decrease in rates of new infections in the city, however the current 7 days rate remains high. The rate of new infections in older people is particularly worrying at the current high level, resulting in increased pressure on hospitals and deaths from COVID for weeks to come.
The wards with the largest number of confirmed cases are Picton (31 cases), Fazakerley (29 cases), Princes Park (28 cases), Warbreck (28 cases), Kirkdale (26 cases), Anfield (22 cases), Everton (20 cases) and Speke-Garston (19 cases).
Between 26 November - 02 December 2020 there were 116 registered deaths in Liverpool, of which 23% (n=27) were COVID-19 deaths.
* Positivity rate = total number of positive tests from all tests carried out in the last 7 days
