Cases, control and testing

Data extracted covering testing up to 5th December 2020 show that the total number of confirmed cases for the last 7 days is 433, a decrease of 57 cases on the previous week. The latest weekly rate of Covid-19 in Liverpool is 86.9 per 100,000 population and the latest positivity testing rate* is 1.4%.

Of the 433 confirmed cases in the last 7 days, 87 (20.1%) were detected using Lateral Flow Testing (LFT) kits. At the current Covid population prevalence in Liverpool, between 1 in 2 to 1 in 5 people who test positive with a lateral flow test might be false positive. They will require confirmatory Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing.

The majority of cases (54%) were in those aged under 40 years, whereas 29% cases were in those aged 40-59 yrs. Of all the confirmed cases in the last seven days 58% were female and 42% were male. Of those cases where ethnicity was given, 80% people were recorded as White British and 20% people were from a Black and Minority Ethnic background.

Compared to the previous week, we have seen a slight decrease in rates of new infections in the city, however the current 7 days rate remains high.

The rate of new infections in older people is particularly worrying at the current high level, resulting in increased pressure on hospitals and deaths from Covid for weeks to come.

The wards with the largest number of confirmed cases are Everton (29 cases), Picton (27 cases), Fazakerley (24 cases), Princes Park (23 cases), Kensington and Fairfield (23 cases), Speke-Garston (20 cases), County (18 cases), Belle Vale (16 cases), Wavertree (16 cases) and Kirkdale (16 cases).
Between 29th November - 5th December 2020 there were 125 registered deaths in Liverpool, of which 21% (n=26) were Covid-19 deaths.
