Cases, control and testing

Data extracted covering testing up to 5 January 2021 show that the total number of confirmed cases for the last 7 days is 4450, an increase of 2890 cases on the previous week. The latest weekly rate of Covid-19 in Liverpool is 893.5 per 100,000 population and the latest positivity testing rate* is 18.9%.
Of the 4450 confirmed cases in the last 7 days, 997 (22.4%) were detected using Lateral Flow Testing (LFT) kits.
The majority of cases (58%) were in those aged under 40 years, whereas 29% cases were in those aged 40-59 yrs. Of all the confirmed cases in the last seven days 52% were female and 48% were male. Of those cases where ethnicity was given, 91% people were recorded as White British and 9% people were from a Black and Minority Ethnic background.
The rates of new infections in the city have been increasing at an alarming rate over the last 2 weeks and the 7 day rates are now higher than the peak values recorded during the second wave of the pandemic.
The wards with the largest number of confirmed cases are Riverside (210 cases), West Derby (206 cases), Speke-Garston (203 cases), Warbreck (193 cases), Clubmoor (191 cases), Yew Tree (184 cases), Belle Vale (178 cases), Knotty Ash (176 cases), Childwall (172 cases) and Allerton and Hunts Cross (166 cases).
Between 31 December 2020 - 06 January 2021 there were 128 registered deaths in Liverpool, of which 13% (n=17) were Covid-19 deaths.
