Children's social care in Liverpool

Steve Reddy, Director of Children and Young People's Services

The Director of Children and Young People's Services, Steve Reddy, sets the scene on what children's social care looks like in Liverpool.

My name is Steve Reddy and I'm the Director of Children and Young People's Services. I joined Liverpool in 2017 and with a brilliant team have taken our service on an improvement journey to a point where we had a very positive visit from OFSTED in 2021, and this year a peer review by Hertfordshire recognised our passion and quality practice.

Liverpool is an incredible place. When you ask people here what is the UK's second city, we say it's London! Liverpool City Council is an organisation that truly values social work and the incredible work our teams do for children and families every day. We have great support from other council departments, the senior management team, the mayor and cabinet.

This is a great time to be joining our team - we have launched a new recruitment and retention strategy, informed by what our staff and other social care staff have told us. We are implementing the Family Safeguarding Model and also working with UNICEF, many partner agencies and crucially, our amazing young people, on developing Liverpool into a UNICEF Child Friendly City.

We want you to develop your career in Liverpool - and you have my absolute commitment we will support you to do this as part of a great team with supportive colleagues and managers in our amazing city.
