St James Gardens
These sunken, secluded cemetery gardens are a little oasis of peace alongside Liverpool's magnificent Anglican Cathedral. Grade I listed by English Heritage, the garden is an ideal place to relax and take in the beauty of the historical architecture which surrounds it.
The park was formerly a cemetery, and a stone path lined with recycled grave stones descends through a short tunnel on entrance to the garden, between the Oratory and the main entrance of the cathedral.
Other features include:
- Stone arch between the Garden Lodge and the steps up to the Mount.
- Huskisson memorial.
- A natural spring.
- A system of broad ramps lined with catacombs.
Open all year round, 24 hours a day.
The main entrance to the garden is off Upper Duke Street. You can also access the gardens from the south entrance near Upper Parliament Street.
