Churchill Way Flyovers

The Churchill Way flyovers will be dismantled over a three-month period.

The two flyovers, which connect Lime Street to Dale Street and Tithebarn Street, will be taken down using a unique process designed to minimise vibrations and protect the art and cultural collections housed in the nearby World Museum Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery and Central Library. The work is being carried out by our contractors Amey and Graham at a cost of £6.75m. 

Road closures - key dates

  • Byrom Street - lane closures from 27th August to 2nd December.
  • Byrom Street - fully closed from Friday evening until early Monday morning on 6th to 9th September, 20th to 23rd September and 4th to 7th October. On these dates, the Birkenhead (Queensway) Tunnel will be closed to Liverpool-bound traffic except buses and emergency vehicles, but Wirral-bound lanes will be open as normal. Motorists heading into Liverpool from Wirral will use the Kingsway Tunnel.
  • Hunter Street - lane closures 27th August to 2nd September and 14th October to 26th November.
  • Hunter Street - fully closed from Friday evening until early Monday morning on 13th to 16th September.
  • Dale Street from Byrom Street to Crosshall Street - lane closures from 2nd September to 15th November. Fully closed from Friday 4th October to Monday 14th October. During this period, residents can access Hatton Garden via Great Crosshall Street or Johnson Street and Truman Street via Fontenoy Street or Primrose Hill.
  • Cuerden Street - closed from Monday 11th November to Friday 20th December.
  • Fontenoy Street and Webster Street - closed from Monday 2nd September to Friday 15th November.

Pedestrian diversion route

A pedestrian diversion route will take people via Dale Street and Hatton Garden to Great Crosshall Street back to the LJMU campus. Alternatively, people can walk up William Brown Street and across Lime Street to Hunter Street.

Public transport 

Only drive into the city centre if absolutely necessary and whenever possible walk, cycle or take the bus or train. 

Parking during this scheme

The following closures will take place to allow for the demolition of the Churchill Way Flyovers.

  • Fontenoy Street car park will be closed and some on-street parking not in use from 23rd August-15th November 2019.
  • Dale Street car park will be closed and some on-street parking not in use from 23rd August-15th November 2019.
  • Hunter Street car park closed from 27th August-20th December 2019.
  • Primrose Hill car park closed from 26th August- 15th November 2019.

Motorists will be directed to nearby car parks at Victoria Street, Mount Pleasant, Queen Square and St John's Shopping Centre.
