Carer's allowance and financial help

There are a range of benefits, tax credits and other financial support that you could receive as a carer, including carer's allowance.

Get a carer's assessment

A carer's assessment will look at what help you need in your role as carer.

After your assessment, we will arrange a financial assessment to see if the council can pay towards care costs and other support you might need.

The financial assessment is free and happens after a needs assessment for the person you care for, or a carer's assessment.

Carer's allowance

Carer's allowance is the main benefit for carers. If you are looking after someone for 35 hours a week or more, you may be eligible.

Find out if you are eligible and apply for carer's allowance on GOV.UK.

Carer's credit

You could get Carer's Credit if you're caring for someone for at least 20 hours a week.

Check what benefits you can get

The quickest way to find out what benefits you can get is to use an independent benefits calculator. They are free to use and anonymous.

Choose a benefits calculator on GOV.UK.

The council's Benefits Maximisation Service can also make sure that you are claiming all the benefits to which you're entitled, and that the benefits you are already claiming are being paid at the correct rate.
