Opening hours

There are no specific opening hours for cemetery access, times may differ from day to day.

The gates are open from dawn till dusk and are operated by the City Watch Team.

Since 1909 the cemetery has not only fulfilled its main purpose as a burial ground, but with its tree lined paths and woodlands, miles of hedgerows and vast array of bird species and wildlife, it has provided a most natural setting for the bereaved to visit their beloved. It is considered to be of sufficient historic importance and is placed on the Register of Parks and Gardens.

Options for burial at Allerton Cemetery

  • Graves that can accommodate two full body burials.
  • Cremated remains plots that can accommodate up to six sets of cremated remains.
  • Specific Muslim and Jewish faith sections.
  • Environmentally friendly alternative - Natural woodland burial area with mature trees, natural plants and grasses.

Natural woodland burials

Graves in the woodland area are excavated to accommodate one full earth burial, to not damage tree roots. You may purchase an adjacent grave in reserve where family members wish to be buried together, subject to availability. Burials in this area can only take place in biodegradable coffins. Instead of the traditional headstones, which aren't allowed in this area, families choose an inscription for the grave marker.

Attending a burial at Allerton Cemetery

Please meet at the Chapel building. Follow the main entrance road for approximately 200m and the chapel building is located directly ahead of you.

Ground staff will meet the family around 5 to 10 minutes before the scheduled burial time at the meeting point.

Allerton Cemetery Lodge

Allerton Cemetery Lodge is located inside the main entrance and houses the administration offices for Liverpool Cemeteries and Crematoria.

Access to the lodge is by invitation or appointment only. Our team must prioritise imminent burials and cremations and will not be available if you arrive without an appointment.

Find a grave

Individual section maps showing exact grave locations are not available for public use.

The Allerton Cemetery section map will help you find your way around and make it easier to find section locations.

Top tip: If you have a grave number, look on the back of newer headstones in your section which will help you to get closer to your chosen grave, as they will often have a grave number inscribed.
