Fostering

Submit a fostering enquiry

If you are interested in fostering a child please complete the online enquiry form or contact Careline for an information pack.

Foster carers receive an allowance and other fees to cover the cost of caring for children, such as food, clothes, travel and household bills.

Who can foster?

People looking to foster must be:

  • Over 21 and mature enough to meet the demands of parenthood.
  • In reasonably good health and fit and well enough to care for children into adulthood.
  • Able to offer a secure home with a spare room for one or more children. You do not have to own your own home.
  • Have the time and ability to foster. You don’t need to give up work to foster, as long as your work is flexible enough to cope with the demands and you have a support network in place.

We do not discriminate on the grounds of class, race, culture, sexual orientation or disability.  We also welcome enquiries from single people wanting to foster.

For more information about the different types of fostering (permanent, short term and private fostering) and what is involved visit the British Association for Adoption and Fostering website.

What happens after you receive my fostering enquiry form?

Home visit

We’ll contact you within five working days to discuss basic criteria such as home, health, background etc.  If you still want to proceed we will visit you at home to discuss your application and circumstances in more detail.

Training course

We will invite you to an induction training course and information day where you can learn about other people’s experiences and learn about family contact, safe caring and letting go when a child moves on.  You will then demonstrate your ability to be a foster carer and what you have learned by taking part in an assessment day.

Assessment and report

The assessing social worker will visit you to write a report and discuss fostering with you and other family members. We’ll also carry out police, probation and medical checks.

Fostering panel

We will present the report to the fostering panel, who will discuss your application. You are entitled to attend the panel. Once formally approved, you will be accepted as a foster carer for Liverpool City Council.
