Building control

Building regulations are minimum standards for design, construction and alterations to virtually every building. 

• Do I need approval? Building regulations apply to most building work even if you don't need planning permission.
• Apply for approval You must notify us of your building work, either through a full plans application, or by submitting a building notice.
• Fees and charges Fees for domestic extensions and alterations, new dwellings and non-domestic premises.
• Tell us when building work is starting After approval, you'll need to tell us when your building work is starting and arrange a site inspection.
• Tell us when building work has finished You'll need to tell us when work has finished so we can arrange a final inspection and issue a completion certificate.
• Energy performance and fire safety certificates If works impact on fire safety and energy performance, contractors must inform the owner, and Building Control, on completion.
• Demolition notice If you want to demolish a building or part of a building you must get permission first by submitting a demolition notice.
• Building completion certificates You can request a copy completion certificate if we were the building control body who inspected your works.
• Building control reversion If a private approved inspector can no longer carry out its building control function for your works, it will need to revert to the council's building control team.
