Business Rates relief and reductions

If you pay business rates, you may be eligible for rate relief. There are several options available.

• Empty properties business rate relief Empty properties are exempt from business rates for three months after they become vacant, or six months for industrial premises. 
• Non-profit and charity rate relief Types of rate relief for non-profit organisations and charity or amateur community sports clubs.
• Local newspapers relief From 1st April 2017 a discount on the rates for office space occupied by local newspapers will be give for two years.
• Transitional relief and supporting small business for 2024/25 The scheme helps those ratepayers who were faced with higher bills as a result of the revaluation. The next revaluation is 1st April 2026.
• Hardship relief We have the power to reduce or remit the amount a business ratepayer is liable to pay.
• Retail discount The 2025/26 Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Business Rates Relief Scheme gives eligible, occupied, retail, hospitality and leisure properties with a 40% relief, up to a cash cap limit of £110,000.
