Level 2 - Skills for teaching independent travel
This Open Awards course is delivered by highly experienced and knowledgeable professionals, who have worked in Independent Travel Training for a combined total of nearly 30 years.
The course is for professionals and volunteers who support children, young people or adults who need help to travel independently.
The course is suitable for:
- learning support assistants
- keyworkers
- travel trainers
- parents and carers
- volunteers
- staff who teach or support independent travel as part of their role
What you’ll learn
You will learn how to teach safe and effective independent travel skills. This includes:
Safeguarding and responsibilities
- safeguarding
- lone working
- data protection
Road safety
- how to teach safe road crossing
- supporting trainees in different traffic environments
Planning a journey
- preparing for different weather conditions
- planning routes
- identifying suitable transport options
Personal safety
- safe behaviour on public transport
- looking after personal belongings
- what to do if something goes wrong
- who to approach for help
Communication skills
- helping trainees communicate clearly and confidently
Risk assessment
- completing and reviewing route based risk assessments
- considering individual needs
Support the learning and development of others
- Support individual learning by using suitable methods, adapting to needs, and overcoming barriers.
- Monitor progress, give timely feedback, and carry out safe one to one learning activities while managing risks.
- Reflect on their own practice, set development goals, and help learners identify their future learning needs.
Practical travel training
- carrying out real world journeys
- supporting trainees to build confidence and independence
Course structure
A 2-day course in Liverpool with classroom learning and outdoor practical sessions.
We can also deliver the course off site anywhere in the UK. Travel and accommodation costs apply for off site delivery.
Each participant will receive templates and resources to support delivery of a travel training programme.
