Level 3 - Skills for managing independent travel training programmes

This Open Awards course is delivered by highly experienced and knowledgeable professionals, who have worked in Independent Travel Training for a combined total of nearly 30 years.

The course is for professionals who are responsible for supporting children, young people and adults to travel safely and independently. It develops the essential leadership, quality and programme management skills needed to run effective independent travel training services.

The course is suitable for professionals aged 18+ working in:

  • Independent travel training services
  • SEND, inclusion or disability support
  • Schools and colleges
  • Adult services
  • Community support or care sectors

What you’ll learn

This accredited Level 3 certificate aims to give the underpinning knowledge and skills needed to work in the role of a travel training manager or co-ordinator, overseeing travel training programmes and supervising a team of travel trainers.

Learners will develop practical skills and knowledge in:

  • Understanding principles of risk assessment and applying them to independent travel programmes.
  • Assessing and managing risk within real travel training contexts.
  • Providing team leadership, including roles, responsibilities and management structures.
  • Setting objectives, monitoring team performance and supporting staff development.
  • Using data collection methods to monitor, review and evaluate a travel training programme.
  • Implementing quality assurance processes to ensure high-quality, consistent delivery.
  • Developing interpersonal skills to strengthen communication, relationships and service standards.
  • Promoting and marketing a travel training programme to partners, stakeholders and the wider community.

Learners complete a structured portfolio of evidence to demonstrate competence in each area.
