Local Authority of Sanctuary
Liverpool is proud to be recognised as a City of Sanctuary and the Liverpool City Council, a Local Authority of Sanctuary.
What is the City of Sanctuary movement?
City of Sanctuary UK is a national movement that believes the UK should be a safe and welcoming place for all — especially for people escaping war, danger, or persecution. The movement works with councils, schools, charities, and community groups across the country to create places where people can feel safe, rebuild their lives, and share their skills. You can read more in the City of Sanctuary Charter.
The Sanctuary network
More than 125 local groups across the UK form the Sanctuary network. Each brings together councils, community organisations, and people with lived experience of seeking sanctuary. By working together, they help families feel welcome, included, and able to thrive in their new communities.
Sanctuary Awards
Sanctuary Awards recognise organisations that go the extra mile to welcome and include people seeking safety. Schools, libraries, councils, and colleges across the country have all received awards for promoting kindness, respect, and belonging.
Liverpool's Local Authority of Sanctuary Award
Liverpool City Council was awarded Local Authority of Sanctuary status in 2022. This national recognition reflects our leadership in supporting people who have had to flee their homes, and our commitment to making Liverpool a fairer, safer, and more inclusive city. It celebrates the work we do with partners and communities to ensure everyone feels welcome and able to contribute to the life of our city.
