About the census

The census happens every 10 years and gives us a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales.

It helps organisations make decisions on planning and funding public services in your area.  Census Day was on Sunday 21 March 2021.

The Office for National Statistics are releasing headline Census data by topic area by the end of January 2023. The topics will include:

  • demography
  • households
  • ethnic group and language
  • religion
  • UK armed forces veterans
  • labour market and travel to work
  • housing
  • sexual orientation and gender identity
  • education
  • health, disability, and unpaid care
