Ants
The most common ant to invade homes is the black garden ant, which are 3 to 5mm long and actually a dark brown colour.
Common worker ants are attracted to sweet food, which they take back to the nest.
Winged or 'flying ants' come out between July and August and disperse within a few days - the treatment of winged ants is not normally carried out for this reason.
How to tell if ants are present
- You will be able to see the ants moving back and forth from nest to food, so you should be able to see the entrance point.
- Inside, you may find ants behind sink units, skirting boards, around doors or window frames or pipes.
- Externally, you will normally find ants near the wall of the house or a soiled or ground area.
Preventing ant infestations
- Seal entry points and maintain a clean environment.
- Keep surfaces clean and free from spills and crumbs - all very attractive to ants!
- Make sure you put your rubbish in the appropriate wheeled bins, with lids closed.
- Vinegar is a natural ant repellent.
