Environmental problems

Cockroaches

Cockroach infestations often occur due to broken drains or building defects. In some cases they can be transferred from products, purchased from infested shops, for example.

The two species commonly found in domestic environments are the German cockroach and the Oriental cockroach.

We only provide treatment for cockroaches as part of our commercial service for landlords.

  • These are dark brown to black and have two dark brown stripes.
  • They are approximately 1.7cm long with a tapering abdomen.
  • Infestations will be in areas of high humidity and near food - kitchens, behind fridges, skirting boards, around cookers and in cupboards.

  • These are a very dark brown or shiny black.
  • They are approximately 2.5cm long.
  • They prefer spaces where they can crawl around, such as basements, cellars, drains and other moist areas.
  • They can tolerate lower temperatures than German cockroaches and can be found in bins and waste areas.

How to tell if cockroaches are present

All cockroaches are nocturnal and will hide during the daytime. However, if an infestation is large enough you may be able to see insects at any time during the day.

  • Watch for insects scuttling away to hide when you enter at night.
  • Use a torch to check behind units, fridges and cookers.
  • Look for faecal matter and redundant egg cases.
  • Large infestations may produce a sweet smell.

Preventing a cockroach infestation

  • Good housekeeping and hygiene should help prevent or control an infestation.
  • Keep all open foodstuffs in tightly sealed containers.
  • Keep surfaces, food preparation areas and floors as clean as possible.
  • Clean kitchen areas, focusing on areas where grease accumulates.
  • Clear up after every meal and do not leave food lying around, especially overnight.
  • Remove rubbish regularly from inside, making sure bags are tied and placed in wheeled bins with lids closed.
  • Ensure any indoor drain access is sealed. The edges of lids should be greased to ensure they are completely sealed.
