Support for new qualified social workers

We know that starting out in your new career can be challenging. That's why we make sure all newly qualified social workers get the support and training you need as part of your assessed and supported year in employment (ASYE).

What is the ASYE?

The assessed and supported year in employment (ASYE) is a programme that gives newly qualified social workers extra support during your first year of employment. The programme aims to develop your skills, knowledge and professional confidence.

How we support you

During your first year of employment you will be supported by a practice development officer (an experienced social worker) and an assessor (usually your manager). This will include:

  • Regular training
  • Extra supervision and observation
  • Monthly reflective case discussions
  • Team supervision
  • Advice and guidance on processes and procedures
  • Practical development
  • Wellbeing support
  • Support to complete the ASYE portfolio

We are here to keep you on track and help with anything you need.

Our ASYE course is different to others because it is deeply rooted in practice and opportunities to reflect. We will support you to develop practical ways that help you to become a more knowledgeable and confident social worker.

Introducing Arita...

In this short video, Arita explains why she chose Liverpool as the place to start her career in children's social work.

Keeping children and families at the heart of what you do

We have contributions from children and adults with lived experience of social work, and we work with regional partners to offer relevant training opportunities.

We are committed to the values of social work such as advocacy, anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory practice, the importance of relationships and empathy.

Come and join the ASYE programme at Liverpool and we will give you the skills to make a real difference to children who need you.
