About the smokefree generation

Information about the smokefree generation policy and what it means for young people.

From 1 January 2027, a new law will help create a smokefree generation by making it illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009.

The change is part of the Tobacco and Vapes Act. It aims to protect future generations from the harms of smoking and reduce smoking-related illness.

Liverpool supports the smokefree generation policy as part of our commitment to improving health and reducing health inequalities.

Smoking remains one of the leading causes of preventable illness and death. It damages nearly every part of the body and can lead to serious illnesses, including cancer, heart disease and breathing problems.

Anyone born on or after 1 January 2009 will never legally be able to buy tobacco products, regardless of their age in the future.
