Births, marriages, deaths

Family history certificates

We hold records of all births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships that have taken place in Liverpool and the majority of West Derby, Toxteth Park and a small area of Prescot, since 1 July 1837.

If a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership took place in Whiston, Sefton or Wirral, Liverpool Register Office cannot provide your certificate. You must apply to the Register Office where the birth, death, marriage or civil partnership took place.

Before you apply

Please supply us with the information below. Unfortunately, without it, we will have to return your application.

Before you apply for a family history certificate by our Standard or Priority service, you will need to find the index reference of the record. You can do this by:

What if I cannot find a record on the Lancashire BMD?

If you cannot find the index reference for a record on the Lancashire BMD database please give us the full event details listed below:

  • Name of the person (and the name of their partner in the case of a marriage/civil partnership).
  • Exact date of the event.
  • Exact place of birth or death.
  • Name of the church, register office or venue, for a marriage/civil partnership.

Alternatively, please provide us with the details below which can be found on the Free BMD database. Your local library may be able to help you with this search.

  • Name and initials exactly as stated on index.
  • Registration district.
  • Year and quarter

If you provide us with the information above we will search our database for the entry. If it appears on our database we can offer the priority service. Unfortunately, if we need to do a manual index search we can only offer the standard service.

Additional verifiable information

You should also include any additional information that will help us verify that we have found the correct record, for example:

  • Birth record – father or mother’s names, mother’s maiden name.
  • Death entry – occupation or address of deceased, possible informant’s names.
  • Marriage entry – occupation or address of either party.
