Renew a private hire or Hackney licence

Find out how to renew your licence.

Failure to renew before your current licence expires means you must be treated as a new applicant.

Will I get a renewal reminder?

If you are not registered with the DBS update service and need a DBS, TaxiPlus will email you with a renewal reminder three months before your current licence expires. Make sure you keep your details update - find out how below.

If you are on the DBS update service and have all your documents, you can apply to renew your badge three months before your licence expires.

Keep your details up to date

For reminders and renewal instructions to reach you, you must let us know if your contact details change.

Your DVLA driver's licence must have your new address on it and be in date. We will not be able to renew your taxi licence if your DVLA driver's licence is not registered to your current address, or if your licence is out of date.

What checks and certificates do I need?

If you are not on the DBS update service, you will receive an email three months before your licence expires with details on how to obtain a new DBS check and DVLA mandate. This process is managed by our approved partner TaxiPlus.

From the 1st January 2016, all drivers renewing a taxi or private hire licence must have a Certificate of Good Conduct if they have lived or been on holiday outside the UK for more than three months since their last licence was issued.

A medical certificate - drivers who are renewing a licence and have reached key ages of 45, 50, 55 or 60, will also need to provide a medical certificate.

Liverpool Standard Part 2 Certificate - all drivers must pass the Liverpool Standard Part 2 course within 12 months of being granted their first taxi licence.

Are you over 65 years of age?

If you are over 65 years of age you’ll need to renew your licence every year.

If your three-yearly DBS check also needs to be completed, our approved partner TaxiPlus will notify you 12 weeks before your licence is due to expire.

If you do not need a DBS and have all your documents, you can apply to renew your licence three months before your current licence expires.

When can I apply for my licence?

When you get an email saying your new DBS certificate is in the post, it will include a link to the online renewal application form. Please use this link to apply once the certificate arrives.

If you are on the DBS update service, you can apply any time from three months before your licence expires.

You must apply 21 days before your old licence expires. If you fail to apply on time, you may be without a licence and unable to work while your application is being processed. We do not issue temporary licences.

What happens next?

Once you have submitted your application form, you will then receive another email with a link to upload scans or clear photos of your DBS certificate, medical (if applicable), LSP2 (if applicable), driving licence proof documents, and recent headshot pictures or 'selfie'.

You must upload all pages of your DBS certificate, and all 13 pages of your medical certificate. If you do not, it will cause delays in your renewal being processed.

You can no longer submit any documents by email as they will not be processed. Need some guidance on uploading the proof documents? Watch or read the 'how to' guide

Once you have done all of the above, we will call you to take the £180 fee within 10 working days.

When can I collect my licence?

We will contact you about where and when to collect your licence once you have:

  • completed your DBS
  • completed the LCC driver licence legal application form online
  • uploaded all your renewal documents
  • paid for your licence

Please note: We cannot issue your new licence if you do not bring your old badges and paper licence with you when you come to collect it.

How much will it cost me?
