Appoint a champion
Once you've signed the charter, appoint a champion who can commit to making your venue a safe space.
What should a champion do?
A champion should have the time, support and resources they need to drive positive change and promote a culture of safety. A champion, should:
- Promote good practice across the workplace, including how to report incidents and record incidents.
- Challenge behaviour, actions or language that could affect safety.
- Speak up when interactions between staff or customers create an unsafe environment.
- Keep the team informed about new procedures, training and safety initiatives.
- Answer questions about the charter.
- Listen to colleagues' concerns and help them access the right support.
Principles a champion should follow
Champions should follow the three principles outlined below.
1. Be visible
Make sure all team members know who the champion is and how to contact them. Champions should have dedicated time to support the charter and help colleagues with any questions or concerns.
2. Be an advocate
Champions should actively promote the charter and encourage a safe environment for everyone. Keep colleagues informed about new initiatives, procedures and improvements. Let staff and customers know that you take safety seriously and will respond appropriately to any concerns or reports.
3. Challenge inappropriate behaviour
Champions should challenge behaviour or language that could make others feel unsafe. They should also encourage colleagues to do the same. This applies to interactions between staff members, as well as between staff and customers.
