Blood pressure checks

Find out how to get a blood pressure check and where to access advice.

High blood pressure can increase your risk of serious health conditions such as heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and dementia. The good news is it’s easily detected and usually manageable.

The only way to know if your blood pressure is high is to have it checked.

Get your blood pressure checked

The NHS recommends getting your blood pressure checked every five years if you’re aged 40 or over. If you’re in this age group, the check is free at many local pharmacies.

What should your blood pressure be

As a guide:

  • Ideal blood pressure: between 90/60 and 120/80
  • High blood pressure: 140/90 or higher
  • Low blood pressure: 90/60 or lower

If you are over 80 years old, blood pressure is generally considered high if it is above 150/90.
