Liverpool Health and Wellbeing Board

Learn how the Health and Wellbeing Board works with partners to improve health and shape local priorities.

The Liverpool Health and Wellbeing Board brings together leaders from the council, the NHS, public health and local organisations to improve the health and wellbeing of residents. 

The Board is a legal partnership required by the Government as part of every local health and care system. For more information, view the health and wellbeing boards guidance (GOV.UK).  

What does the Board do?

The Board helps to: 

  • understand the health needs of residents 
  • agree the city's priorities for improving health and wellbeing 
  • bring together organisations to deliver joined-up services 
  • reduce health inequalities across Liverpool 
  • support prevention and help people stay healthy for longer 
  • monitor progress and make sure local plans are making a difference 

The Board's work is informed by evidence, research and feedback from residents to ensure decisions reflect the needs of communities. 

Who is involved?

Liverpool's board is chaired by Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture. The Deputy Chair is Sarah Thwaites, Chief Executive of Healthwatch Liverpool.

How does this affect you?

The Health and Wellbeing Board influences many of the services that support your health including: 

  • preventing ill health and improving wellbeing
  • supporting children and families
  • mental health services 
  • healthy ageing 
  • tackling health inequalities 
  • health protection, including vaccinations and screening 
  • community programmes 

How the Board is guided

The Board meets four times a year to review progress, discuss local health issues and agree future priorities. 

It oversees progress of recommendations from the State of Health in the City: Liverpool 2040 report alongside the Liverpool 2040 Strategic Partnership Framework

The Board relies on evidence about the health needs of local people including the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment and Pharmacy Needs Assessment
