Friends of Anfield Cemetery
Anfield Cemetery is the largest geographical footprint from which to tell Liverpool's connection with local, national and international events over the last 200 years. It is the final destination of between 550,000 and 600,000 people and has been visited by untold millions.
The 'Lifting the Lids' Heritage Trail encourages visitors to view the heritage boards throughout the cemetery, each of which tells the story of Liverpool's past. They also name the people known to be close by.
The trail challenges visitors to produce alternative heritage board layouts and submit them to Friends of Anfield Cemetery for future consideration at enquiries@friendsofanfield.com
The trail includes the following:
- Liverpool's Last Duel
- Liverpool's Victoria Cross Heroes
- Could this be Jack the Ripper?
- The Perfect Murder?
- Liverpool's Boxing Heroes
- Liverpool and Everton Football Club: Founders, managers and players
- Star Spangled Banner
- The Men of the Chinese Labour Corps
- The Forgotten Women of War
- Liverpool's American Confederates
- Anfield's Chinese Martyr: Sou Zen Young
- Sir Alfred Lewis Jones (1845-1909)
- Other notable names in the area
The disabled friendly heritage trail has been made possible by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the following:
- Positive Futures for creating the displays
- Manor Monumental for installing the displays
- Historic England for their advice
- Liverpool City Council for allowing the trail to be installed
- Liverpool Central Library for their research help
- Hobs for their advice and Nonconform for their design work
You can download a PDF of the trail below but we encourage you to visit the site to get the full experience.
Please note, this PDF may not be accessible to users of assistive technology as it has been designed for installation boards to be visited in person.
