Private family scattering garden
A private family scattering garden at Springwood Crematorium can accommodate between 2 to 4 sets of your loved one's ashes. The brick lined and gravelled garden includes a boulder with personalised plaque, and planted with either a rose bush or shrub.
These gardens are in the Garden of Contemplation, located to the left of the main drive as you enter Springwood. There is space for a bench, which you can buy from us.
An example of the garden and boulder with inscription is below:
You can also choose to have a hand-painted motif or a photo on the plaque. Motif options include:
The motif options shown above include a rose, a tree, a butterfly, a Robin Red Breast, a cross with flowers and a feather.
Lease term
The lease term is 10 years, with the option to renew at the end of the lease period.
Gardens are usually assigned by the next available spot. The space will accommodate up to two sets of ashes at the start of the lease - a further two sets of cremated remains can be added at a later date.
Only the person leasing the private garden can give permission to scatter ashes there, and they have the right to stop anyone from placing items in the garden. While the person arranging the cremation may agree to scatter their loved one's ashes in a garden leased by someone else, they have no legal rights to that garden. Please consider this carefully for the future.
Renewing the private garden
When the lease period is coming to an end, we will contact you to ask if you wish to renew it for a further 10 years, the associated costs and how to pay. If you do not wish to renew, the boulder will be removed and the garden will be released for use. Your right to use the private garden ends if you do not renew the lease.
Boulders will also be removed at the end of the term if we are unable to contact you, or if you have not told us your contact details have changed.

Terms and conditions
When you lease a private family scattering garden, you agree to the following conditions:
- You are buying the right to use this location for 10 years. The lease does not mean you own the land within the grounds.
- This is a purchase of the initial lease of the garden with scattering of up to 2 sets of ashes. If the second set of ashes is scattered at a later time, a further fee applies.
- No scattering is allowed in the garden without the leaseholder's permission. Permission from the applicant for cremation is also required for the scattering (where different).
- A Rose bush or shrub will be planted by Liverpool City Council as part of the lease. No other form of planting in the ground is allowed. Any other flowers or plants must be within a container - not in the ground.
- Only the leaseholder can authorise for any ashes to be scattered within the designated garden plot.
- Only the leaseholder can authorise any changes to the lease or plot, and agree to any items to be placed on the plot by other people.
- Any ashes scattered on the plot cannot be exhumed once scattered.
- Items are only allowed within the gravel area. Any items placed outside the gravel area will be removed.
- You can use this garden only for the agreed lease time. When the lease ends or you do not renew, the space will be made available for someone else to use.
- Adding further sets of ashes does not change the lease term.
- Changes made to a plaque after you apply will cost extra. For example, if you want to move a name from the first boulder to a new second boulder to rearrange the inscription, you will be charged an additional fee
