Renew a private hire or taxicab licence
You will receive a renewal reminder from us by email three months before your current licence expires.
In order for reminders and renewal instructions to reach you, you must let us know if your contact details change.
Update your contact details now
Read our privacy notice which tells you how we use your data.
Please note: failure to renew before your current licence expires means you must be treated as a new applicant.
Why do you need my details?
We need a valid email address to ensure you get all the reminders, information and links you need.
We no longer issue temporary licences, so if your renewal application is delayed because we cannot get in touch with you, you will not be able to work if your current licence expires while your new one is being processed.
The address on your DVLA driver’s licence
Your DVLA driver's licence must have your new address on it and be in date. We will not be able to renew your taxi licence if your DVLA driver's licence is not registered to your current address, or if your licence is out of date.
What checks and certificates do I need?
DBS check and DVLA mandate - you will receive an email three months before your licence expires with details on how to obtain a new DBS check and DVLA mandate. This process is managed by our approved partner TaxiPlus (formerly Personnel Checks).
From the 1st January 2016, all drivers renewing a taxi or private hire licence must have a Certificate of Good Conduct if they have lived or been on holiday outside the UK for more than three months since their last licence was issued.
A medical certificate - drivers who are renewing a licence and have reached key ages of 45, 50, 55 or 60, will also need to provide a medical certificate. We will let you know if this is the case.
Liverpool Standard Part 2 Certificate - we no longer give a temporary licence to drivers who have not completed this course.
Are you over 65 years of age?
If you are over 65 years of age you’ll need to renew your licence every year. As long as your contact details are up-to-date, we will send you a renewal notice at least four weeks before your licence is due to expire. This notice tells you what you will need to do.
If your three-yearly DBS check also needs to be completed, our approved partner TaxiPlus will notify you 12 weeks before your licence is due to expire. They will send you information on what you will need to do.
When can I apply for my licence?
When you receive an email saying your new DBS certificate is in the post, you will also be given a link to the online taxi licence renewal application form.
You must apply 21 days before your old taxi licence expires, or as soon as you receive your certificate. Temporary licences are no longer issued so, failure to apply in good time may mean you are without a licence and unable to work while your application is being processed.
When you have completed and submitted the renewal application form we emailed to you, you must then complete the LCC driver licence legal application form below.
Complete the LCC driver licence application
What happens next?
Once you have completed the legal application form, you will then receive another email with a link to upload scans or clear photos of your DBS certificate, medical, LSP2 and driving licence proof documents. You must upload all pages of your DBS certificate, and all 13 pages of your medical certificate. If you do not, it will cause delays in your renewal being processed.
You can no longer submit any documents by email as they will not be processed. Need some guidance on uploading the proof documents? Watch or read the 'how to' guide
Once you have done all of the above, we will call you to take the £150 fee within 10 days.
When can I collect my licence?
We will contact you about where and when to collect your licence once you have:
- completed your DBS
- applied online using your 24-digit code
- completed the LCC driver licence legal application form online
- uploaded all your renewal documents
- paid for your licence
Please note: We cannot issue your new licence if you do not bring your original passport and right to work documents with you. View a list of the documents we accept.
How much will it cost me?
Convicted of an offence?
You must tell us if you are convicted of an offence while you hold a licence.
