High quality and inclusive education, skills and employment

  • A multi-agency group to address attendance issues established and data-led partnership approach through the north Liverpool prototype. Helped to improve persistent absence rates across all settings (incl. 19% reduction in primary schools and 11% fall in secondaries since March 2023);
  • More than 600 new school places have been created and work is well underway to deliver many more;
  • The priority areas in the Department for Education’s Priority Education Investment Areas (PEIA) 3-year plan were delivered and the initiative and funding ended in March 2025;
  • The council has awarded over £1.5m to childcare providers to create 366 early years places, 303 before school places and 1,858 after school places to support working parents. This is possible due to government grant funding to support the expansion of childcare places;
  • A SEND graduated approach toolkit has been launched to make sure the right support is in place at the right time for children and young people with SEND;
  • A supported internship programme has been embedded across the council to provide young people with an EHCP an opportunity to gain work experience and skills;
  • An improved approach to employment and skills is being developed through the Inclusive Economic Growth Strategy and delivery plan which is in development; and
  • Economic inactivity due to long term sickness has decreased in Liverpool from 31.5% in 2023 to 29.7% in 2024, compared to a rise over the twelve months in England from 26.3% to 27.0%.
