Delivery of the Commissioner’s Improvement Strategy led to Commissioner’s leaving the Council and the Council returning to local control. The chair of the Independent Improvement and Assurance Board concluded that there has been “significant and substantial improvement,” and the council is now in charge of its own continuous improvement;
The council has led an expansion of the Liverpool Strategic Partnership and developed the Liverpool 2040 framework in collaboration with partners to set a long-term vision and outcomes for the city;
Worked to ease budgetary pressures locally, in part by increasing Council Tax collection rates, reducing outstanding Business Rates and cutting the amount of outstanding debt owed. The council’s lobbying alongside other Core Cities has helped ensure that deprivation is reinstated into government’s funding formula for councils;
Equality objectives were approved by Cabinet in March 2024 and have been embedded in business planning. A corporate EDI team is now in place, improving equality impact assessments and progressing work on an anti-racism action plan for the council and strategy for the city;
Speke East was announced as a trailblazer neighbourhood for community-led regeneration in the 2025 Spending Review and is set to receive up to £20m over the next decade;
A Customer Experience Improvement Plan was developed setting out aims to improve customer experience when interacting with the council. Building blocks have now been implemented including a new case management system and ensuring the right resources and skills are in place.
