How to join

You can contact Friends Groups directly via their websites or social media accounts above. Alternatively contact us if you would like to join one of the Parks Groups listed above.

Can I set up a Friends Group?

If your local park isn't listed above, contact us if you would like to set up a Friends Group or volunteer group. We will only accept enquiries for new groups where there is not currently a group that is active. If a group already exists, we will signpost you to their activities.

You must have public liability insurance and an outline of activities before we can grant permission. Your group doesn't need to be constituted to volunteer in parks, but it is helpful if you intend to make funding bids to charitable organisations.

We will arrange a site meeting with parks officers and explain the requirements. We can also provide a park operations guide and signpost to existing groups who can help with setting up new groups. They can provide examples of a group constitution, recommend public liability insurance providers and advise on committee processes.

The council works in partnership with constituted groups, but they are external and we are not responsible for groups or managing group disputes.

Unauthorised groups and activities

Works in our parks are subject to a number of restrictions such as planning consent, wildlife legislation and other laws, as well as our operational requirements. Our role is to work with authorised groups to ensure these are not breached.

Individuals are personally liable for any criminal offences resulting from unauthorised works.  We have the right to remove unauthorised installations in our parks.

Remember, if you wish to establish a volunteer group or obtain permissions for existing volunteer activities, you must contact us.
