Approved Mental Health Professional Service (AMHP)

The AMHP service is responsible for undertaking assessments under the Mental Health Act in Liverpool, and in some cases outside the city. Here, we explain when an assessment may be needed and how to request one if you are a GP, mental health practitioner or other health care professional.

• When is a Mental Health Act assessment required? An assessment may be needed if a person is considered to pose a risk to themselves and others.
• Request a referral You must have seen and spoken to the person within the last 24 hours before making a referral and ruled out alternative treatment and support.
• What happens during an assessment? The AMHP service is responsible for undertaking assessments under the Mental Health Act in Liverpool, and in some cases outside the city.
