How to avoid electrical hazards

Faulty or dangerous electrics can cause shocks, burns, scalds and fires. Broken plug sockets, bare cables and faulty electrical appliances are the main causes of electrical hazards.

To prevent electrical hazards:

  • Ensure all live parts are covered in a safe, non-conducting material. Conduct visual inspections of light fittings, sockets, plugs, and the fuse box.
  • Keep water away from electricals. Take extra caution with electricals in the kitchen or bathroom. If there is rising or penetrating damp, remedy this quickly so it does not interfere with the electrical system.
  • Protect your property by ensuring the electrics are correctly earthed.
  • Make sure all electricity meters and fuse boxes are kept in a cupboard or box that can resist fire for at least 30 minutes. This cupboard should also be lockable to stop anyone from accidentally getting hurt.
  • Do not tamper with utility meters. Tampered meters are extremely dangerous, and homes found to have tampered meters can face immediate closure. To report a tampered meter, visit Stay Energy Safe’s website.
