Autistic Spectrum Disorder training

We offer advice, support and training to families of children or young people aged 0-19 years in Liverpool who are waiting for an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessment or already have a diagnosis.

Our training programmes aim to build on a family’s knowledge of ASD, are tailored to the age of the child and accredited by the National Autistic Society (NAS). Most sessions are held during term time.

• Drop in sessions.These take place twice a month in different children’s centres across the city. They are not training sessions, but are for parents or carers who wish to talk in a private one to one setting. You do not need a diagnosis of ASD to attend but must have questions or concerns about the young person.
• Pre diagnosis course.A one full-day workshop, or two half-day sessions, designed to help families support their child and manage their social, communication and behavioural difficulties while waiting for an assessment to be completed.
• Social communication difficulties and social behaviour. For parents or carers who are waiting for their child to have an ASD pathway assessment. This is a one full day or two half day classroom sessions.
• Telephone consultations. Families can pre book a telephone consultation with a member of the ASD training team. To book a call please email asdtrainingteam@liverpool.gov.uk
• Question and answer sessionsDelivered in Liverpool primary and secondary schools. Please contact your child’s setting to find out if they are taking part.
• Targeted support - These training sessions offer families specific areas of support including emotional wellbeing and puberty. Visit Liverpool Local Offer to find out more.

To attend any of the following courses, children must have a diagnosis of ASD. Classroom sessions run from 9.30am to 12pm.

• NAS Early Bird for under 4s. Eight classroom sessions and four home visits for two parents or carers. The child must be present for the home visits.
• NAS Early Bird Plus for 4-9. Eight classroom sessions and two home visits. For two parents or carers and one professional who works with their child. The child does not have to be present for the home visits.
• NAS Teen life for 10-16. Six classroom sessions for two parents or carers and one professional who is working with the young person.
