Housing

What you can do to find a home

Even if you make a homeless application, you can still take steps to find yourself somewhere to live. View the steps you can take below.

Search for private rented accommodation

Use websites such as Rightmove and Zoopla to search for rented accommodation.

Find out more about renting from a private landlord or letting agent (shelter.org.uk).

See what benefits you may apply for

If your are eligible, you can apply for housing benefit or housing costs through Universal Credit to help pay your rent

See the Local Housing Allowance rates to work out how much housing benefit you might get.

You can seek benefit advice from our Financial Inclusion Team if you need support with a benefit or Universal Credit application.

Join the housing register

Sign up for social housing via Property Pool Plus.

Ask for support from friends and family

You may be more comfortable living with supportive family and friends.

You can still make a homeless application if you’re living with friend or a family member. If you do this, you may be considered ‘homeless at home’.

Who has priority?

For us to offer you temporary accommodation while you search for a more permanent home, you must have a priority need.

Check if you may have a priority housing need (shelter.org.uk).
