Bins and recycling [TEST]

Why wasn't my bin emptied?

Most bins are emptied as planned. If your bin was not emptied, it is usually for one of the reasons below.

The wrong items were in the bin

Bin crews may not empty bins that contain items that do not belong in that bin. They will usually place a yellow sticker on the bin which tells you the bin was incorrectly filled. [Is it always a yellow sticker?].

Blue recycling bins

Do not put nappies, food waste, batteries, electrical items, textiles or black bags in your blue recycling bin

Purple household waste bins

Do not put electrical items or garden waste in the purple bin

Green garden waste bins

Do not put stone, concrete, timber, builder's waste, glass, plastic, metal, paper or cardboard, plant pots, soil or turf in your green garden waste bin.

Grey food waste bins

Do not put packaging of any kind, liquids such as milk, oil or any fat or any material that is not food waste in your grey food waste bin.

What to do

Remove the incorrect items and present your bin on your next collection day. Check our more detailed guidance for each bin:

The bin was not presented correctly

Your bin may not have been out by the required time or may not have been accessible to the crew.

What to do

Make sure your bin is presented correctly before 6.30am on collection day.

The bin was too heavy or overfilled

For safety reasons, crews cannot empty bins that are too heavy or have waste spilling out.

What to do

Remove some of the contents and present the bin on your next collection day.

Your green bin subscription has expired

We charge a yearly fee for collecting green bins. If we have not emptied yours, your subscription may have come to an end.

The crew couldn't safely access the bin

Roadworks, parked vehicles, or other obstructions can sometimes prevent access.

What to do

Leave your bin out until the end of the day. If it remains uncollected, check our service updates.

Before you report a missed bin

Before reporting a missed bin, check that:

  • your collection was due today
  • your bin was out before 6.30am
  • the correct items were in the bin
  • the bin was not overfilled
  • there were no service disruptions in your area [Can we communicate these more effectively via social media perhaps?]

If you think we have missed your bin by mistake, you can report a missed collection online.
