What we love about Otterspool

Otterspool Promenade

The promenade starts just north of Garston Docks and runs all the way to Otterspool Park, giving fantastic views of the River Mersey, passing ships, and the Wirral Peninsula. Its wide paths are ideal for walking, running and cycling.

A narrower path and cycle lane then continues all the way to Liverpool's city centre, ending at the Albert Dock and passing Festival Gardens and Southern Grasslands. This riverside route is part of Liverpool's section of the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Network.

  • Action sports hub and skatepark

Otterspool Skatepark is a concrete skatepark behind the promenade. It's a free, family-friendly space with a variety of features that make it a favourite with skaters, BMXers and scooter riders.

  • Otterspool Adventure Centre

Enjoy the centre's play equipment, 12-hole adventure mini golf course, Go Karting track or bounce on their inflatable pillow. The centre and café are managed independently. Visit the centre website for more.

  • Bird and wildlife watching

The tidal mudflats and saltmarsh in the area both support flocks of waders and wildfowl. Sightings include oystercatcher, turnstone, redshank, shelduck and seasonal gulls.

  • Jericho Lane Sports Hub

This football and fitness complex on Otterspool Drive, is a key hub for grassroots and community football in South Liverpool. The site is independently run by iGym Jericho Lane.

About Otterspool Park and Promenade

Otterspool Park and Promenade takes its name from the Old English Otirpul or Oterpol, after the otters that once thrived in the tidal creek and freshwater pools where a stream met the Mersey River.

Construction of the promenade started in 1929, and it opened in 1950. The parkland behind the promenade was modelled using material excavated from the Mersey Tunnel and then carefully landscaped.

Enjoy gardens and grasslands

Festival Gardens and Southern Grasslands, accessed from Otterspool Park, are home to beautifully landscaped woodlands, grasslands, meadows and an Oriental Garden.

Extensive planting has created rich habitats that enhance the biodiversity in this coastal area. Dedicated wildlife corridors also support and increase populations of insects, butterflies, and bees.
