Our English sessions are delivered in a variety of ways — in the classroom, in the classroom and online, or online only. All English courses require an assessment.

Entry requirements

No qualifications are needed to enrol but you must be proficient in spoken English.

Functional Skills English

When you enrol, you will complete an initial assessment to confirm your current level of English.

These qualifications are about using literacy skills in everyday life and work. They comprise of three elements:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking, listening and communication

You will be entered for a qualification at the correct level for your current ability. These range from Entry Level 2 up to Level 2.

On completing your Level 2 you may progress onto a GCSE English course next. Learners with a learning difficulty can apply for extra support.

GCSE English

To enrol, you will need to pass an assessment first or enrol on one of our pre-GCSE courses to enrol. We can offer you other courses if you are not ready for GCSE.
