Bins and recycling

Green bin collections

The last green bin collections for 2024 will take place in the week commencing Monday 25th November. The service will restart at the end of February 2025.

Pay for green waste collection

All green bin collections in Liverpool must be paid for. Find out how to pay for your green waste collection and buy green bins.

To renew, you must pay your annual fee 12 months after your last payment. Your small white chipped bin sticker will be reactivated within 5 working days of your payment. If you are new to this service, we will send you a bin sticker within 15 working days of payment.

How much is the fee?

We collect green bins between the last week of February and the last week of November each year. The annual fee for a green bin to be emptied once a fortnight during this period is £50.

You pay an annual fee from the date you sign up. The collection fee does not include the cost of a green bin itself. Please note that the collection service is 'opt in' so you do not need to cancel it if you do not wish to pay for it.

Who can sign up for collections?

Anyone in Liverpool can pay for green waste collection, however, you must be able to store the bin in your property and present it on your collection day.

How many green bins can I have?

We will empty up to five garden waste bins from a residential property as long as they are presented safely.

If you already have a small white sticker on your bin, the chip in it will be reactivated within 5 working days of your payment. You can then present your green bin on the next collection day.

When will my first collection be?

Next year's paid for service starts in February 2024.

Use our postcode look-up to see your bin collection dates.

What if I can’t afford the fee?

If you are struggling financially and in urgent need we may be able to give you some support via the Liverpool Citizens Support Scheme.

Can I get a refund if you fail to collect my bin?

Missed collections are rare. If we are unable to collect your bin due to circumstances beyond our control we will return for it as soon as we can.

We cannot empty green bins that contain the wrong items, are too heavy or too full for the lid to close. If this happens we will place a sticker on the green bin with the reason it was left. Once you have dealt with the issue, please re-present the green bin on the next scheduled collection date.

What happens if my bin or sticker is lost, stolen or damaged?

Any bin damaged by us or our contractor will be repaired or replaced free of charge.

We will charge an administration and delivery fee to replace any lost, stolen or damaged bin along with a new sticker. If you find your lost bin you will need to let us know. Find out how to request a new bin.

Will I get a discount if I sign up part-way through the year?

You pay an annual fee from the date you sign up.

Can I get a refund if I no longer want this service?

Following a 14-day cooling-off period, the fee is non-refundable. Please complete the form below if you wish to cancel your green waste collection service in the 14-day cooling-off period and request a refund.

Please note that the collection service is 'opt in' so you do not need to cancel it if you do not wish to pay for it.

Can I get a free green bin if I use it for leaves that have fallen from council-owned trees or my neighbour's trees?

No. The law states that a tree owner cannot be held liable for fallen leaves. If you don't wish to pay for a green bin, you can compost the leaves or take them to a recycling centre. We also routinely clear leaves from public areas such as public paths, highways and parks.

Consider composting

Composting is a great alternative to using your green and purple bins. Find out how to compost at home, join or set up a local community composting scheme.
