Illuminated traffic signs
Many traffic signs are lit at night so that warnings to motorists are clearly visible. If you spot an issue with an illuminated traffic sign please tell us.
Illuminated traffic signs include 'one way', 'keep left' or 'no entry' signs.

What you can report
Faults with the signpost or light may include:
- post is leaning or down
- light is out
- light is flashing
- light is on 24 hours
- light is not bright enough
- light fixtures hanging down
- door damaged or missing
- cables exposed
Is a tree blocking the sign?
Report a tree that is causing a highway or safety issue
Is the sign lit, but message unclear?
If the light works but the sign has been vandalised or is facing the wrong way, this is a street furniture issue.
We prioritise unlit 'one way' or 'no entry' signs located at the start of the street, so please provide the location (for example, the name of the roads if on a junction) and a description of the problem.
Call us to report a fault
Please call 0151 233 3001 to report a fault or issue with illuminated signs.
What happens next?
Once you have submitted your request, we will review it. If required we will request an external contractor to visit and fix the issue.
We aim to attend emergency reports, such as leaning posts, exposed cables and hanging fixtures within 2 hours.
We aim to attend all other faults within 15 working days.
If the fault is with the electricity supply, we will ask the electricity supplier to carry out the repair. In these cases, the timescales are out of our control, but their typical response time is up to 35 working days.
Traffic regulations state that not all road signs need to be lit electrically. Where this is the case, we will replace broken illuminated signs with reflective ones.
