Moving a street light

You can apply to have a street light moved to allow access for residential driveways or junctions for new developments on adopted roads.

The relocation of street lights is often complicated by the layout of the existing lighting system. Moving one street light a few metres could have a detrimental impact on lighting levels on the existing highway, and potentially for neighbouring properties.

The charges for moving a street light depend on the complexity of the work and may include moving several columns to ensure the lighting design is correct. When we receive an application we will arrange an assessment and quotation. All costs must be covered by the person making the relocation request.

How to apply

Moving a street light for driveway access

Before we can consider relocating a street light to accommodate a driveway, you must first apply for a dropped kerb to arrange a site inspection and technical assessment.

Moving a street light for new developments

This is normally dealt with by the highways department when applications have been submitted for new estate developments, as part of the planning process.

What happens next?

After the site inspection and/or technical assessment, you will receive a report with associated costs. Street lighting costs may be quoted separately to any other works and are based on materials and service transfer.
