Apply to suspend a traffic signal
How to apply and pay for an engineer to switch off a traffic signal to allow roadworks to be carried out in Liverpool.
Before you apply
You must email our Streetworks Team at streetworks@liverpool.gov.uk to get a permit for the dates you want to carry out the roadworks. If you want to carry out emergency roadworks in the next 48 hours, you must still email for permission.
How to apply
You must submit your application, with payment in full, five days before the roadworks are due to start.
We do accept emergency applications, but you must email streetworks@liverpool.gov.uk for permission to carry out emergency roadworks before you submit the form.
Please have the following at hand before completing the online form:
- your Streetworks permit reference number, or, in an emergency, proof of permission for the work to go ahead
- a traffic management plan to upload
The person who completes the form must represent the contractor carrying out the work.

How much?
For an engineer to complete two 30-minute visits to turn a signal off and back on again, the following fees are charged:
- Between 8am and 5pm, Monday–Friday: £974.90
- Out-of-hours, on weekends or Bank Holidays: £1,218.79
- In an emergency within the next 48 hours: £1,260
What happens next?
Our Urban Traffic Control Team will email you within five working days to confirm an engineer is available on the day and time you have requested. Do not start work until you have received this confirmation email.
If you don't get an email from the team in the five-day timeframe, please call 0151 233 0773.
Refunds
If you cancel your application at least three working days before the date you requested the signal switch off, we will charge a £50 cancellation fee. We will refund the remaining balance.
If the site is not ready when the engineer arrives to carry out the job as scheduled, we cannot issue a refund. You will then need to pay for another visit. Second visits are charged at half the standard rate - see 'How much' above for the standard first visit fees.
