Council Tax

Council Tax discount for prisoners

We do not count prisoners when looking at the number of people living in a property for Council Tax purposes.

We’ll reduce your Council Tax by 25% if the person who normally lives with you is in prison for a crime other than non-payment of Council Tax and you are the only person now living there.

If the property is left unoccupied and the person in prison intends to return, an exemption may apply which means there will be no Council Tax to pay at all whilst the property is empty.

How to apply

You can apply online for this discount. You’ll need to tell us some details about the person in prison, including the prisoner number, the date they were taken into custody and their expected release date.

What happens next?

We will check the details you’ve provided and get in touch with the prison service.

We aim to respond to you within 14 working days with our decision. However, if we need further information from you this may delay the application.
